Blackbeard the Pirate

For hundreds of years, pirates roamed the seas attacking and stealing from sailors and townspeople. Blackbeard was a merciless brute and one of the nastiest pirates in history. Born in England, his real name was Edward Teach. He took the name Blackbeard when he became a pirate and grew a long black beard that he braided and tied up with ribbons. He would put smoking fuses in his hair to look more terrifying in battle. His pirate fleet of up to 300 men attacked ships along the coast from Virginia to the Carolinas. Blackbeard once led a one-week blockade of Charleston, South Carolina. He finally met his end when Robert Maynard hunted him down. To this day nobody knows where Blackbeard hid his vast treasure.

Swabby

Swabby represents one of the countless pirates who sailed with the infamous Blackbeard. Swabby first set sea at the tender age of 14. He began as a privateer, sanctioned by the government to attack and loot enemy ships during wartime. After the war, Swabby joined Blackbeard's crew and became a pirate, attacking and looting any ship he could catch. While Swabby found battles thrilling, much of his work was dull and routine. He handled the sails, worked the pumps and swabbed the decks. Even though Swabby fought fearlessly and never complained, Blackbeard did not reward his loyalty. To the contrary, Blackbeard marooned Swabby on a deserted island with no food so that he could get an even larger share of the treasure.

Lieutenant Robert Maynard

Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy was the man who killed Blackbeard, the scourge of the seas. The governor of the colony of Virginia gave Maynard the command of two sloops. Maynard finally caught up to Blackbeard at Ocracoke Inlet, off the coast of North Carolina. Blackbeard struck first, firing a cannon and killing several of Maynard's sailors. But Maynard outsmarted Blackbeard by hiding below deck. When Blackbeard boarded the sloop he was ambushed. During an incredible battle, Maynard and Blackbeard faced off in a duel. Blackbeard fought like a madman, receiving 20 cutlass wounds and five pistol shots before he finally fell. With Blackbeard's head tied to the ships bow, Maynard sailed back to Virginia for his reward.
